Main op­po­si­tion head Renho quits

Renho, leader of the main op­po­si­tion party, said on Thurs­day she is step­ping down, cit­ing her fail­ure to re­gain voter sup­port de­spite a se­ries of scan­dals buf­fet­ing the rul­ing party. The Demo­cratic Party is spear­head­ing op­po­si­tion ques­tion­ing of Prime Min­is­ter Shinzo Abe and his Cabi­net. Renho, who only uses one name, was her party’s first fe­male leader and was con­sid­ered a pos­si­ble prime min­is­ter when Democrats were in power dur­ing 2009-12.
