Wa­ter en­vi­ron­ment im­proves last year

Wa­ter en­vi­ron­men­tal prob­lems de­creased by 60 per­cent in Bei­jing last year af­ter the im­ple­men­ta­tion of the river chief sys­tem, the mu­nic­i­pal in­for­ma­tion of­fice said on Fri­day. Bei­jing has ap­pointed 408 chiefs for 425 rivers across the city in 2016, and aims to en­sure 77 per­cent of its ma­jor rivers, lakes and reser­voirs meet wa­ter stan­dards by 2020.
