The Karakoram Highway stretches more than 1,200 kilometers through the Karakoram Mountains, connecting Pakistan and Kashgar, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It’s also known as China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, in the northern section of the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The construction of the highway started in the 1960s with Chinese aid, and finished in 1979. It is the only land route connecting the north of Pakistan with the capital Islamabad and the southern coastal regions.
