Sand mines closed along Yangtze River

More than a dozen sand mines in the up­per reaches of the Yangtze River in Sichuan prov­ince have been closed to pro­tect the lo­cal en­vi­ron­ment. In moves that be­gan in April, 18 il­le­gal sand mines were closed, ac­cord­ing to Serang Yeshe, an of­fi­cial in Baiyu county on the Jin­sha River, the up­per sec­tion of the Yangtze. The mines lacked suf­fi­cient en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion mea­sures, failed to meet sewage stan­dards, he said.
