Carrie Lam meets new head of Liaison Office
The central government’s new top liaison official visited the chief executive at the Government House of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Thursday.
This is the first official meeting between the two leaders after the State Council’s new series of appointment last week.
CE Carrie Lam Cheng Yuetngor extended a warm welcome to Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR. He is returning to the city.
Wang served in the Hong Kong Liaison Office a few years ago. Last week, upon the State Council’s appointment, he left his previous post as the liaison chief in Macao and succeeded Zhang Xiaoming, former liaison chief in Hong Kong and newly appointed director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.
Lam said she believed that under Wang’s leadership, the Liaison Office would continue to support the work of the SAR government in accordance with the Basic Law and the “one country, two systems” principle, to help maintain and contribute to Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability.
She noted that the country’s current economic development, its opening-up policy, the Belt and Road Initiative and the GuangdongHong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development present Hong Kong with tremendous opportunities.
Lam said she hoped the Liaison Office would continue to help promote cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland so the SAR can give full play to its unique advantages and boost development.
She also expressed her gratitude to Wang for his support for Hong Kong’s young people over the years. Lam said she looked forward to joining with him to explore more opportunities and provide assistance for Hong Kong young people who are willing to study and participate in internship programs on the mainland and also to develop careers.
Wang said that President Xi Jinping’s inspection visit to Hong Kong to mark the 20 anniversary of the SAR received good feedback in the city. The people in Hong Kong were thinking more about stability and progressing, Wang said.
He spoke highly of the work of Lam and her administration, which focuses on promoting economic development and addressing livelihood issues.
New policies and measures on various aspects including education, youth, housing and poverty alleviation have brought new outlook in the city, Wang said.
The director said the Liaison Office would continue to fully implement the “one country, two systems” principle and the Basic Law, supporting the CE and the SAR government in carrying out its work in accordance with the law.
He vowed to push forward Hong Kong-mainland communication and cooperation, assist Hong Kong to play its part in various national development strategies.
Wang also pledged to make new contributions to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, national security and development interests. He is also keen to maintain Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability and to promote the long-term implementation of “one country, two systems”.
