Art: Exhibition showcases intricate carvings on gourd
For nearly three decades, Ma Jianghong has carved copies of centuries-old frescoes and
art on gourds. The artist in Beijing, who hails from Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, spends several hours a day reconstructing the beauty of the paintings in the Dunhuang grottoes in Gansu province and the Kezi’er caves in Xinjiang, as well as Buddhist stories depicted in
art, on the hard skin. Her carved gourds and paintings are now on show in Beijing’s 798 art district, until Nov 19.
