Po­lice un­cover fam­ily of thieves

Po­lice in Xianyang say they have solved more than 120 bur­glar­ies com­mit­ted over the past six years by de­tain­ing a fam­ily of three on Oct 31. The sus­pects are a fa­ther sur­named Zhang, 47; his wife, sur­named Dong, 46; and their son, 26, who are al­leged to have taken food, clothes, home ap­pli­ances Shen­zhen In­ter­me­di­ate Peo­ple’s Court held a pub­lic ap­peal hear­ing on Nov 6 for a case in which a man had been con­victed of il­le­gally sell­ing en­dan­gered par­rots. Wang Peng, 32, had been sen­tenced to five years in prison and fined 5,000 yuan ($755) by Baoan Dis­trict Peo­ple’s Court in March for sell­ing two sun para­keets, an en­dan­gered species na­tive to South Amer­ica. The pros­e­cu­tor ac­cused Wang of sell­ing an­i­mals un­der the State’s pro­tec­tion. But Wang, who raises the birds, claims they are not wildlife. Wang ap­pealed to the higher court af­ter re­fus­ing to ac­cept the ear­lier ver­dict. His hear­ing con­tin­ues.
