China released 47 rare milu deer into the wild last week in the wetland near Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province to improve biodiversity and protect the ecosystem of the country’s largest freshwater lake. It was the first release of milu deer into the wild in a region where the species vanished around 1,000 years ago. Milu deer, also known as Pere David’s deer, are a flagship species of the wetland ecosystem.
