Au­gust 2005: A me­moran­dum of un­der­stand­ing to set up Wen­zhou-Kean Univer­sity was signed be­tween the New Jersey and Wen­zhou gov­ern­ments. Oc­to­ber 2010: 1.5 bil­lion yuan ($225 mil­lion) was in­vested in the con­struc­tion of the cam­pus.

Novem­ber 2011: The Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion of­fi­cially ap­proved its es­tab­lish­ment.

Septem­ber 2012: The first class of stu­dents were en­rolled. Lu Shanzhen, math­e­ma­ti­cian and for­mer pres­i­dent of Bei­jing Nor­mal Univer­sity, was ap­pointed the first chan­cel­lor. April 2013: The univer­sity re­ceived ap­proval to set up four ma­jors: in­ter­na­tional busi­ness, eco­nom­ics, English and com­puter science. March 2014: The univer­sity was for­mally es­tab­lished. March 2015: Its first co­hort of seven in­ter­na­tional stu­dents was wel­comed.
