Ningxia takes center stage in New York
A performance showcasing the arts and culture of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region was presented at Town Hall in New York on Tuesday night.
The show CulturesofChina: CharmofNingxia was presented by the Ningxia Song & Dance Theater and featured dance, drama, solos, duets and instrumental performances.
The troupe had been on tour since Aug 17, performing in St Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Philadelphia. New York was its last stop in the US before returning to China.
Located in the northwest part of China, Ningxia is an autonomous region for the Hui people, one of China’s 56 ethnic groups. It has a population of 5.6 million, one third of which is Hui.
“This performance fuses both the traditional and modern spirits of Chinese arts, illustrating the ethnic customs in the northwest part of China, which should provide an unforgettable artistic delight,” said Zhang Qiyue, Chinese consul general in New York.
The performance was cohosted by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Ningxia Hui autonomous region’s government. Clockwise from left: the dance Charming Umbrella; Guo Rong plays Songofthe YangzeRiver; the dance GoldenPitcher; the folk art of “face changing”.
