Cashier duped by fake police call

China Daily (USA) - - CHINA -

A female cashier at a small company was cheated out of 1.27 million yuan ($191,000) by a telecommunication fraudster who told her she was wanted by the police. On Sept 10, the woman, surnamed Yang, received a phone call from Shanghai saying she was wanted by police for alleged involvement in a criminal case. The caller, who pretended to be a policeman, said the charges would be dropped if Yang deposited the money in a specified bank account. Later, Yang realized that she had been cheated and reported the matter to the police. An investigation is under way.
