Ha­did show­cases fash­ion col­lec­tion

Get­ting in line for Shang­hai’s most pop­u­lar ice cream, tak­ing self­ies against the ma­jes­tic sky­lines and ex­pe­ri­enc­ing the city's fa­mous nightlife and party scene, Gigi Ha­did’s maiden trip to China could not have been more touristy.

“I think most of the time I love just watch­ing peo­ple that are around me. It’s real and sur­real,” said Ha­did, an In­sta­gram su­per­star with some 25 mil­lion fol­low­ers.

But the 21-year-old Amer­i­can su­per­model was not in town to play. In­stead, she was in Shang­hai as part of the global tour to pro­mote the Tommy Hil­figer X Gigi Ha­did cap­sule col­lec­tion, fol­low­ing ap­pear­ances in Tokyo, Ber­lin and Dubai. The fash­ion cam­paign is her largest since be­gin­ning col­lab­o­ra­tions with Hil­figer last year.

Dressed in an over­sized bomber jacket from the col­lec­tion, which she calls “a per­fect first de­sign job”, and leather leg­gings, Ha­did vis­ited the mas­sively pop­u­lar Shang­hai ice cream store WIYF — cus­tomers of­ten have to wait at least an hour in queue — be­fore in­ter­act­ing with Chi­nese so­cial me­dia in­flu­encers and at­tend­ing a meet-and-greet ses­sion with fans at Three on the Bund.

Her col­lec­tion fea­tures ca­sual wear, shoes and time­pieces that are all char­ac­ter­ized by Ha­did’s “Amer­i­can girl-next-door style” and had hit the shelves early in Septem­ber af­ter they were shown at New York Fash­ion Week.

Early in Oc­to­ber, be­fore Ha­did em­barked on her tour of Asia, Hil­figer an­nounced that up to 50 per­cent of the col­lec­tion had al­ready been snapped up.

Hav­ing started her run­way ca­reer at the age of two with Guess Baby, whose co-founder is a fam­ily friend, Ha­did said that she only started to take the pro­fes­sion se­ri­ously dur­ing her col­lege years.

She scored ma­jor break­throughs in her ca­reer when she was ap­pointed as the brand am­bas­sador for cos­met­ics gi­ant May­belline and made head­lines for her ap­pear­ance on the Vic­to­ria’s Se­cret Fash­ion Show last year.

When asked about her ex­pe­ri­ence in the fash­ion in­dus­try thus far, she told China Daily that the part that she hates the most is hav­ing to be away from home for weeks. On the bright side, she cites the peo­ple she gets to work with as her fa­vorite part of the job.

“Be­cause it’s ei­ther you get along with the peo­ple very well and ex­pe­ri­ence new things with them, or you are kind of thrown into a sit­u­a­tion where you don’t know any­one and I think it’s re­ally fun when you fi­nally all click and get to know each other,” said Ha­did.
