Database of Japan's China files to be established

China Daily (USA) - - NEWS CAPSULE -

The National Library of China (NLC) has begun a project to set up a database that will hold research undertaken by Japan on China since the 19th century.

The database, which will draw on collections held by the NLC and other domestic and overseas institutions, will also research the Japanese invasion period.

For decades, Japan was engaged in detailed investigation and research into the Chinese economy, politics and society, drawing data from chambers of commerce, enterprises and consulates, according to the NLC.

As part of the project, publication of a set of books featuring research by the East Asia Common Culture College, a Japanese college set up in Shanghai in the early 20th century, which was tasked with some of the investigations, was announced.
