Asian journalism embraces opportunities for cooperation
The Forum for Asian Deans of Journalism and Communication took place in Shanghai on Wednesday, bringing together experts from universities and the media industry to discuss current and future perspectives of Asian journalism and communication.
“The collaboration of journalism and communication is important for the development of Asia as a large community, so we have to share our opinions through this forum on how to face the opportunities and challenges in Asian journalism and communication together,” Guo Weimin, vice-minister of the State Council Information Office, said at the event’s opening ceremony.
Ten government officials, 46 Chinese representatives from 30 universities and colleges, and 40 foreign experts from 33 universities in 21 countries participated in the one-day forum.
Addressing the growth of new media was mentioned frequently at the forum.
By the end of last year, there were 1,906 newspaper publishers on the Chinese mainland, including 218 national and 787 provincial outlets. China’s daily circulation of newspapers ranked top in the world last year.
“However, China’s traditional media is facing a huge challenge from new media, which provides Asian media with a historic opportunity to make the transition to internet platforms ,” said Wang J ian jun, president of Shanghai Media Group.
Another theme emphasized at the forum was collaboration among institutions and universities across Asia to learn media methods from Western countries and adapt them to local Asian cultures to improve the media industry.
“In order to improve the reputation and influence of Asian media, Asian countries have to enhance understanding and communication with each other instead of relying on Western media,” said Zhao Qizheng, dean of the school of journalism at Renmin University of China.
“We have to balance the gap between academic study and professional work by organizing discussions between parties from different universities in Asia, to have a global vision and upgrade the media industry in Asia,” said Marco Molina Polo, director of the advancement office at De La Salle University in the Philippines.
