Infant on mend after harrowing trip

A newborn baby diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis — a medical condition where a section of the intestines become nonfunctional — was saved after an ambulance transported him for over 18 hours to Hangzhou from Chongqing. The 13-dayold child is now recovering after surgery at an affiliate hospital of Zhejiang University. He was in critical condition from birth and local doctors sought help online after failing to improve his status. An ambulance then began an over 1,600-kilometer journey after the Hangzhou hospital promised to operate on the infant. The surgery took place on March 12.
