The his­tory of the tun­nel in the photo can be dated back to the Tang Dy­nasty. Now, the wooden frames sup­port­ing the walls are de­cayed. Yet even in the an­cient times, such safety de­vices may not have been enough to pro­tect the min­ers. Ac­cord­ing to records of the Song Dy­nasty: “dex­ing is a place pro­duc­ing sil­ver. Moun­tains here have open­ings as large as win­dows… Min­ers ex­ca­vate ores us­ing axes and chis­els, and if the tun­nel wall col­lapses, the ca­su­al­ties could be many.”
