Beyond Warfare

China Scenic - - Alternative - Photo/ Hao Pei

Even though beacon towers were built for military purposes, their service was never restricted to warfare. During ancient times, soldiers became farmers when there was no war, and the towers were turned into granaries instead of garrisons. Nowadays, most of these towers have collapsed, leaving only some yellow earthen platforms, like the one in the photo. Yet the“retired veteran”is still working, watching the people and herds of sheep wandering beneath its feet.
