Within the defense area along the Ming Great Wall there were nine large garrisons altogether, namely the“nine Garrisons of the Ming Dynasty,”of which Datong in today’s Shanxi was the first one and Taiyuan in the same area was the second. Yanmenguan was situated at the center of Taiyuan’s defense line. Its 18 fortresses and nearly 170 kilometers of wall connecting them formed a gigantic defense system.
