Reducing Damage to the Tiankeng
Approaching the bottom of a tiankeng requires careful preparation. Descending by rope would have been easy but we also had to consider how to minimize damage to tiankeng that would have been caused by drilling and building a descending system. Before every descent, we made several plans according to remote sensing data and aerial photos, and most importantly, data collected from field study. The photo shows how our team members made a fixture on the wall 80 meters above the bottom of the tiankeng.
