The African Open­bill

The Asian open­bill has a cousin who lives far away. The African open­bill, as its name im­plies, is found mainly on the African con­ti­nent (as shown in the map above). At a glance, one can hardly tell the dif­fer­ence be­tween the two species be­cause they are quite sim­i­lar in ap­pear­ance, ex­cept that the African open­bill has black feath­ers and the Asian open­bill has white. Both openbills for­age on small fresh­wa­ter crea­tures such as snails, frogs and crabs. Photo/ Hein­rich van den Berg
