The highly-specified bills make Asian openbills efficient foragers, meaning that in China they have few competitors for food. However, their strong preference for snails also makes them vulnerable to food shortages. Drought and pesticide overuse could result in a decline of snails, and in this case, their primary competitor would be other openbills, not another species of bird. This photo shows a pair of openbills in Yunnan fighting for food.
