In a country like Kenya, with a high maternal mortality rate, Mpamanech is saving the lives of newborn infants and their mothers.
“Patients do not have to inform the health professionals at a referral hospital of their problem as their data is already in the app and has been shared by health workers from previous health centers,” said Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi, Director of Research at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, who helped develop the technology.
“Upon the arrival of the patient from another facility or community facility to a larger hospital, the information provided in the app is just confirmed with the patient. This enables follow-up treatment if needed,” said Kyobutungi.
She adds that the app analyzes health data of pregnant mothers and newborns. This includes any information on diseases and progress of treatment from the previous hospitals.
