SKETCHBOOK
“Switzerland will always hold a very special place in my heart and my sketchbook,” says Coloradobased educational consultant Tim Shuman, who has lived and traveled—and drawn—abroad for much of his career. This scene, of the 18th-century Reformed Church in Frutigen, a small town in the Bernese Highlands south of Lake Thun, is one that he is particularly fond of. “Not only does Frutigen have some of the most beautiful mountain vistas you’ll ever see, but it also happens to be the birthplace of my maternal grandmother. When I was a child in Ohio, grandma, who immigrated to the United States in 1912 at the age of 21, would regale us with stories of growing up in a magical land of snow, cowbells, chocolate, and alps. I dreamed of visiting this place myself, and I finally managed to do so— on several occasions—as an adult. Frutigen and the surrounding area was even more magical than she described. I can’t wait to return again one day.”
