Book Talk: ‘Kingdom of Women’

Global Times – Metro Beijing - - STRATEGIST -

The Mosuo tribe in Yunnan, western China is the last surviving matrilineal and matriarchal society in the world. Theirs is a story discovered somewhat unexpectedly by Choo Waihong, a corporate lawyer from Singapore who left behind 15hour days and the exhausting demands of corporate life to travel China and learn more about her heritage. The Mosuo community worships the female spirit, celebrates every aspect of womanhood and structures its social hierarchy according to maternal bloodlines. Choo’s book is the first insider account of Mosuo life. Her writing sheds light on a remarkable society that teeters on the edge of extinction in the midst of modern China and ties into current debates about traditional gender roles. Attend this book talk to have a chat with the author and hear discussions about gender roles and whether this society could be the perfect model for a feminist utopia.
