“The new apart­ment is in strong con­trast to our pre­vi­ous one. I want to live in it right now.”

So said Sun Huiju, a Bei­jing res­i­dent who moved to a new res­i­den­tial com­mu­nity af­ter her apart­ment in a shan­ty­town in Xicheng district started re­con­struc­tion work four years ago. She said that the new apart­ment has a Euro­pean style and there are gar­dens on the roofs of the build­ings. Her apart­ment was a part of the first project un­der the city’s shan­ty­town ren­o­va­tion cam­paign which was launched in down­town Bei­jing in 2013. A to­tal of 1,242 house­holds were in­volved in the project. The new homes have im­proved se­cu­rity sys­tems, wa­ter drainage, heat­ing, garbage dis­posal among other ameni­ties.
