Founded in 1945, the Phil­har­mo­nia Orches­tra is one of the world’s lead­ing orches­tras. Through­out its his­tory, the Orches­tra has col­lab­o­rated with most of the great clas­si­cal artists of the 20th cen­tury, in­clud­ing Furt­wan­gler, Richard Strauss, Toscanini, Kara­jan and Gi­ulini. Other great names have in­cluded Lorin Maazel, Ric­cardo Muti and Vladimir Ashke­nazy. This year sees the orches­tra cel­e­brate the 20th an­niver­sary of its res­i­den­cies at Lon­don’s South­bank Cen­tre and Bed­ford Corn Ex­change. This up­com­ing Shang­hai con­cert will be con­ducted by the orches­tra’s con­duc­tor lau­re­ate Vladimir Ashke­nazy, who led the orches­tra on a ma­jor tour of Latin Amer­ica in 2014. Ashke­nazy is also the con­duc­tor with the Ice­land Sym­phony and NHK Sym­phony orches­tras. From 2009 to 2013, Ashke­nazy was the prin­ci­pal con­duc­tor and artis­tic ad­viser to the Syd­ney Sym­phony Orches­tra, with whom he has col­lab­o­rated on a num­ber of sig­nif­i­cant record­ing projects and ma­jor in­ter­na­tional tours.
