Peo­ple, busi­nesses fined un­der city smok­ing ban

Shang­hai health in­spec­tion de­part­ments is­sued over 4,000 yuan ($581.96) in fines to in­di­vid­u­als and busi­nesses for vi­o­lat­ing the new city­wide an­ti­smok­ing or­di­nance, re­ported thep­a­per.cn.

Start­ing Wed­nes­day, Shang­hai banned cig­a­rette smok­ing in all in­door ar­eas.

Four in­di­vid­u­als in Min­hang, Songjiang and Jiad­ing dis­tricts were caught smok­ing and fined 50 yuan each. A shop­ping mall and a pub­lic bath­room in Songjiang were also fined 2,000 yuan each.

Cit­i­zen hot line 12345 re­ceived 295 calls as of 4 pm Wed­nes­day re­port­ing in­stances of in­door smok­ing. Most com­plaints oc­curred in restau­rants, ho­tels and pub­lic toi­lets.

Health of­fi­cers will con­tinue in­spect­ing des­ig­nated ar­eas in the fol­low­ing week to pro­mote the new reg­u­la­tion.

The new reg­u­la­tion is ex­pected to be strictly en­forced, un­like its pre­vi­ous ver­sion, now that it al­lows of­fi­cers to fine vi­o­la­tors on-site.
