Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center will stage a Chinese version of Every Brilliant Thing written by Duncan Macmillan featuring famed Chinese director and actor Wen Zhang, an award winner for dozens of popular films and TV series. It’s been 12 years since Wen performed onstage. This one-man play follows the story that a boy makes a list of brilliant things in life for his depressed mother and as he grows up and falls in love, the list seems to help him save himself. When the English play was shown in Edinburgh Festival 2014, the Guardian lauded it as “the funniest play you’ll see about depression,” and over the years different productions of the play have received overwhelming popularity in the UK and North American. The Chinese version will be directed by Li Bonan, whose acclaimed works include How Much Love Can be Messed Up and Mr. and Mrs. Single.
