Organ donations surpass 400 mark in Shanghai
The Red Cross Society of China Shanghai Branch has announced it has surpassed its target of 400 organ donations since 2013, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News on Thursday.
The very first case of an organ donation in the city occurred in August 2013 when the liver and kidneys of a citizen surnamed Huang were used after his death from an intracranial hemorrhage.
Then, the China Organ Transplant Response System was able to successfully match his organs with three patients suffering from organ failure.
According to statistics, there had been 200 cases of organ donation made in Shanghai by June 2016.
The utility rate of livers and kidneys is the highest among all organs donated, at around 92 percent of all transplants. The organ donation rate in Shanghai is 2.5 times higher than the rest of China.
