Woman rescued after attempted suicide at river
A 49-year-old woman surnamed Liu, upset over a family quarrel, jumped into a river in Pudong New Area during an attempt to kill herself Sunday night, Xinmin Evening News reported Monday. Police received a call from a passerby and rushed to the scene, but the woman had already jumped.
“I ran as fast as I could. The silt was very slippery, and my feet were cut by a lot of stones. The water in the middle of the river suddenly became very deep,” responding police officer Bian recounted.
Night fishermen used their flashlights to guide the officer toward the woman floating in the water. A few minutes later Bian found her and brought her back to shore.
Liu was resuscitated and sent to a hospital. There, her vital signs returned to normal. After patient persuasion by Bian, her mood gradually changed and she promised to give up on the idea of suicide.
