Woman res­cued after at­tempted sui­cide at river

A 49-year-old woman sur­named Liu, up­set over a fam­ily quar­rel, jumped into a river in Pudong New Area dur­ing an at­tempt to kill her­self Sun­day night, Xin­min Evening News re­ported Mon­day. Po­lice re­ceived a call from a passerby and rushed to the scene, but the woman had al­ready jumped.

“I ran as fast as I could. The silt was very slip­pery, and my feet were cut by a lot of stones. The water in the mid­dle of the river sud­denly be­came very deep,” re­spond­ing po­lice of­fi­cer Bian re­counted.

Night fish­er­men used their flash­lights to guide the of­fi­cer to­ward the woman float­ing in the water. A few min­utes later Bian found her and brought her back to shore.

Liu was re­sus­ci­tated and sent to a hos­pi­tal. There, her vi­tal signs re­turned to nor­mal. After pa­tient per­sua­sion by Bian, her mood grad­u­ally changed and she promised to give up on the idea of sui­cide.
