City starts public sign language video hot line
September 24 was the 60th World Deaf Day. Shanghai’s public service hot line 12345 used the occasion to soft-launch a new sign language video service, thepaper.cn reported Sunday.
A Baoshan district resident surnamed Huang tested the service and proposed adding some posts for sign language translation in hospitals to help deaf patients.
According to 12345 staff, the first phase of the pilot program is being carried out only in Jing’an, Baoshan and Jiading districts, and Pudong New Area. Next year the service could become available throughout the city.
According to the Shanghai Disabled Persons’ Federation, there are nearly 70,000 deaf residents in the city.
