City starts pub­lic sign lan­guage video hot line

Septem­ber 24 was the 60th World Deaf Day. Shang­hai’s pub­lic ser­vice hot line 12345 used the oc­ca­sion to soft-launch a new sign lan­guage video ser­vice, thep­a­per.cn re­ported Sun­day.

A Baoshan district res­i­dent sur­named Huang tested the ser­vice and pro­posed adding some posts for sign lan­guage trans­la­tion in hos­pi­tals to help deaf pa­tients.

Ac­cord­ing to 12345 staff, the first phase of the pi­lot pro­gram is be­ing car­ried out only in Jing’an, Baoshan and Jiad­ing dis­tricts, and Pudong New Area. Next year the ser­vice could be­come avail­able through­out the city.

Ac­cord­ing to the Shang­hai Dis­abled Per­sons’ Fed­er­a­tion, there are nearly 70,000 deaf res­i­dents in the city.
