Over 40,000 ayi (housekeepers) in Shanghai received official certification to work in their industry, Laodong Daily reported Thursday.

The first batch of 13 housekeeping institutions in Huangpu, Xuhui, Yangpu, Jing’an, Putuo, Minhang districts and Pudong New Area launched housekeeping community service certificates in an effort to standardize and manage the growing sector.

“Judging from the current market situation, many average families who hire a housekeeper spend a lot of money,” a manager from Shanghai Jiawang Cleaning Service Co said. “But those high fees do not always ensure a reliable housekeeper.”

In order to help find honest and reliable housekeepers, Shanghai launched the new certification program, which allows a family to quickly and effectively verify a housekeeper’s background.

On the back of every certificate is a QR code. After scanning, clients will be able to see the housekeeper’s photo, ID info, company and service experience.
