Abuse is no cure

Global Times - Weekend - - OPINION -

Several teenagers recently posted complaints online about physical and mental abuse they say they suffered at a treatment center for Internet addiction in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. Such treatment centers have been heavily criticized, but they still exist because of a huge demand from Chinese parents. At their wits’ end seeing their Internet-addicted children seemingly wasting their time and attention, many parents see these places as a last resort. Unfortunately for their kids the cure is often worse than the disease. What these children really need is help from patient parents and school teachers, not violent methods. Parents have to step up and authorities must take action. There can only be zero tolerance for such abuse of our youth.
