Kun­shan to host Chi­nese Opera Gala

Kun­shan in East China’s Jiangsu Prov­ince will host the First Chi­nese Opera Gala from late Oc­to­ber to De­cem­ber, China’s Min­istry of Cul­ture and Tourism an­nounced at a press con­fer­ence on Thurs­day.

Ac­cord­ing Li Wen, vice mayor of Kun­shan, the gala will fea­ture 120 types of tra­di­tional Chi­nese op­eras, in­clud­ing Pek­ing Opera and Yueju Opera as well as the lesser-known Danju- and Shaxi-style op­eras.

Many of the op­eras will be per­formed by na­tional-level troupes.

“We plan to even­tu­ally cover all 348 types of Chi­nese op­eras over the next three years at the gala. Ad­di­tion­ally, we will pub­lish a book cov­er­ing each type of opera that will cover its history, de­vel­op­ment, mu­sic and pro­tec­tion mea­sures,” Min­istry of Cul­ture and Tourism of­fi­cial Lü Yuzhong said at the con­fer­ence.
