Those un­fa­mil­iar with opera may not know ev­ery bar of Puc­cini’s “but they will prob­a­bly rec­og­nize the first strains of “Nes­sun Dorma,” the grand, soar­ing aria that’s as close to a pop hit as an aria can be, pop­u­lar­ized in the

90s by the great Lu­ciano Pavarotti. This pro­duc­tion is di­rected by leg­endary film­maker Franco Zef­firelli, and Princess Tu­ran­dot is played by Nina Stemme, widely re­garded as one of the finest liv­ing so­pra­nos. The part of Calàf, the be­sot­ted prince who sings the afore­men­tioned aria, is played by Ital­ian tenor Marco Berti.
