Cen­sus of­fi­cers—bomb car­ri­ers?

The Cen­sus and Sta­tis­tics Depart­ment told some 5,000 cen­sus tak­ers to stop us­ing their Chi­nese-made por­ta­ble power banks af­ter one ex­ploded. The depart­ment had given each officer a power bank to charge the tablets they use to con­duct ques­tion­naires. One officer was work­ing in Sha Tin when the power bank he was charg­ing burst into flames. No­body was in­jured, but a photo of the dam­aged unit was posted on an in­ter­net fo­rum where ne­ti­zens com­pared the power banks to bombs. The depart­ment said it had bought the banks ac­cord­ing to pro­cure­ment pro­ce­dures. Our take: This must be the gov­ern­ment’s way of get­ting us to sub­mit our e-ques­tion­naires…
