Fly­ers Foot Bill for 3rd Run­way

From Au­gust 1, trav­el­ers us­ing Hong Kong In­ter­na­tional Air­port have to pay a sur­charge to help fund con­struc­tion of its $141.5 bil­lion third run­way. De­part­ing first and busi­ness class pas­sen­gers on long-haul flights will pay $180, while those on short-haul flights will pay $160. De­part­ing econ­omy class pas­sen­gers will have to pay $160 on long-haul flights and $90 on short­haul flights. Pas­sen­gers in tran­sit or trans­fer­ring will have to pay a sur­charge of $70. Our take: Why not just call it the White Ele­phant Tax?
