Go multitasking mad: Make your furniture multitask. Your bed is a great example: it takes up a large amount of floor area, so why not put that space to double use by including storage underneath it? Be creative: Your furnishings can be so much more than they might at first seem. I custom-make Murphy beds for many of my clients. Not only do they take up minimal space when not in use, but they become beautiful sculptural pieces too. Bold is big: People think that in order to keep small spaces bright, the walls need to be white. While that is certainly an option, a feature wall in a deep jewel tone really helps elongate a space making it seem bigger than it actually is. Make a statement: Instead of many small pieces of furniture, focus on two or three larger ones. The room will look less cluttered, and therefore larger. Choose exposure: Fittings and furnishings with exposed legs create the illusion of space so choose, for example, a raised sofa instead of one that sits on the ground or is boxy with a skirt. Extend outdoors: If you are lucky to have any outdoor space, whether it’s a tiny balcony or a rooftop, think of it as an extension of your home. Invest in outdoor plants, and a lounge set or statement chair that fits with your design aesthetic indoors. //
