Editor’s Letter

Hong Kong Tatler Society - - Editor’s Letter - — Sean Fitzpatrick Group Editor-in-Chief

This magazine, more than any other that we publish, celebrates extraordinary people in our city. It also celebrates extraordinary events, those opulent soirees that filled our diaries throughout the past 12 months. And The 500 List states who we believe will best define Hong Kong society in the year ahead.

It was a sensational year for parties. The Hong Kong Ballet marked its jade anniversary with a blacktie gala at the Four Seasons hotel, which not only raised important funds but also awareness of how this most beloved of cultural institutions has evolved in its 35 years. As always, Hong Kong Tatler was a proud sponsor, but what made the celebration more special was our beautiful December cover story featuring chairwoman Daisy Ho, which delved into the ballet’s history and made use of stunning archival images.

Other memorable events include Pradasphere, the Italian fashion house’s first major bash on our shores for many years and which, with an appearance by electro-pop sensation Lorde, did not disappoint. I also must tip the hat to our own Tatler Ball, which many have called the best ball in recent memory. You can see our recap of these, plus other great parties, in Top 25 Parties of the Year (p.74).

We have made the requisite adjustments to the annual 500 List (p.145), our exhaustive record of the city’s most accomplished and influential people. Among those making their debut are Archangels Access co-founder and UN World Food Programme chairman Kevin Yeung, who has been on our radar for some time (we profiled him in 2013). Another newcomer is Deborah Hung, wife of Stephen. One of the city’s most glamorous women, Deborah was recently appointed a global ambassador for Versace, placing her in the vanguard of the fashion elite. Stephen makes it into our Power Houses spread (p.153). We have also included a Ones to Watch spread (p.182) of young A-listers, already fixtures on the social circuit, who we think will one day make The 500 List in their own right. Indeed, everyone in this magazine is an extraordinary individual and it is only fitting that Hong Kong Tatler’s new tagline is “Life. Extraordinary.”
