This gor­geous French evening coat, made around 1925 from silk, fur and metal, went on dis­play at the Met­ro­pol­i­tan Mu­seum of Art last sum­mer as part of the ex­hi­bi­tion China: Through the Look­ing Glass. The New York show in­cluded more than 140 cou­ture and ready-to-wear de­signs shown along­side Chi­nese art and screens dis­play­ing im­ages by Hong Kong film di­rec­tor Wong Kar-wei. De­sign­ers in­flu­enced by Chi­nese cul­ture whose work fea­tured in the ex­hi­bi­tion in­cluded Ralph Lau­ren, Alexan­der McQueen, Coco Chanel, Chris­tian Dior, Tom Ford, Marc Ja­cobs and Karl Lager­feld. The open­ing of the ex­hi­bi­tion co­in­cided with the New York so­ci­ety event of the year, the Met Gala, a party at­tended by 600 A-Lis­ters that out­does the Os­cars as a plat­form for fash­ion.
