The Art of Deco-dence

Hong Kong Tatler Society - - TOP 20 PARTIES OF THE YEAR -

The stage of the Lyric Theatre at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts was transformed to resemble a grand ballroom for the Academy Ball in December. A spiral staircase and gold light fixtures anchored the space, which looked like something out of The Great Gatsby. The decor fitted perfectly with the theme for the evening, “Art Deco Dance,” and complemented the glamorous 1930s-inspired looks put together by the likes of Wendy Law, Jane Louey and Olivia Croucher Buckingham. A wide range of magical musical and dance performances, many be students of the academy, kept the guests entertained. One of the highlights was the screening of a short blackand-white silent movie, The Persistence of Time, starring Neo Yau Hawk-sau, a graduate of the academy’s School of Film and Television. The movie was created specially for the occasion. Another high point came when a group of guests, including Sabrina Ho, Daniel Chan and Wendy Yu, put on a fashion show, displaying timepieces from JaegerLeCoultre’s latest collection as they descended the spiral staircase. A live auction wrapped up the evening, which raised a total of HK$9 million, setting a new record for the academy. All funds will go to the academy’s student scholarship programme.
