The United Nations described Mexico City’s air in 1992 as the most polluted on the planet. The city responded with the Proaire programme, which has hugely improved air quality by replacing old cars, relocating refineries and factories, banning cars one day per week in the metropolitan area and implementing a bikesharing scheme. The city is now focusing on urban greening and has built numerous vertical gardens.
