The English county of Es­sex has just built an anaer­o­bic di­ges­tion plant, in which the fer­men­ta­tion of food waste pro­duces meth­ane that is used to gen­er­ate elec­tric­ity. In pro­cess­ing 45,000 tonnes of food waste per year, the plant will cre­ate enough elec­tric­ity to power more than 4,000 homes.
