In the late 19th century, intrepid Viennese goldsmith Jacques Adler moved to Istanbul to set up a jewellery workshop. He soon became much in demand, and counted royal families among his devoted clients. Now headquartered in Geneva, another city known for its exquisite craftsmanship, Adler continues as a family enterprise, with brothers Franklin and Carlos at the helm. The brothers were born in Istanbul and inspired by the city of their birth. After studying in England and Switzerland, they were determined to bring an East-west flavour to the business.
From sourcing and buying to design and store management, the family is heavily involved across the company’s network, which includes bases in London, Hong Kong and Gstaad, Switzerland. Unabashedly describing themselves as ‘control freaks,’ the Adler brothers keep the company vertically integrated to ensure the quality of the stones they buy.
Adler is known for its innovative streak. Today that means combining carbon with sparkling gemstones, such as in its Atlantis line. Travel is a constant source of inspiration, with both brothers constantly on the move. This translates into jewellery that showcases contrasting artistic traditions with international inspiration.
Of his working relationship with his brother, Franklin says: “We are equally at ease in different cultures and we both travel extensively. It is wonderful to know that while one is abroad, the other one is at headquarters and able to deal with situations as they arise. It is also important to have second opinions. We use each other as sounding boards and discuss all strategic decisions that will have an impact on the company.”
