THROW ON YOUR BLACK-TIE BEST FOR HONG KONG’S INAUGURAL AMFAR GALA, WHICH WILL SET THE CITY ABUZZ IN THE NAME OF AIDS RESEARCH
From cannes to mumbai and from Rio to Milan, the American Foundation for Aids Research (amfar) balls lure the world’s glitterati to party in the name of medical advances. The galas, which take place in more than 10 cities around the world each year, have so far generated in excess of US$100 million for the organisation. Now, amfar has finally landed in Hong Kong, with its inaugural ball set for March 14 at Shaw Studios. The gala, which is chaired by Pansy Ho and features Michelle Yeoh as its ambassador, will include a cocktail reception, dinner, live auction and entertainment. A range of tickets are available, the most exclusive of which is the Grand Philanthropist Package. This includes dinner for 12 guests and a host of other perks for HK$500,000. The money raised will help confront a serious HIV/AIDS epidemic in Asia, which killed 250,000 people regionally in 2013. About five million people in Asia and the Pacific Islands were living with the disease in 2013, according to the United Nations.
