Art Basel in Hong Kong’s Direc­tor Asia, Ade­line Ooi, dis­cusses the op­por­tu­ni­ties and chal­lenges her new role of­fers to drive the re­gion’s art for­ward

alaysian-born Ade­line Ooi re­placed Mag­nus Ren­frew as Direc­tor Asia for Art Basel in Hong Kong in Jan­uary. A fin­earts grad­u­ate from Cen­tral Saint Martins in Lon­don, Ooi is tasked with lead­ing the devel­op­ment of the Art Basel in Hong Kong show and en­sur­ing a strong Asian pres­ence through Art Basel’s in­ter­na­tional ac­tiv­i­ties. She’s no stranger to the Art Basel scene, though, hav­ing pre­vi­ously served as its VIP re­la­tions manager for Southeast Asia, over­see­ing In­done­sia, Malaysia, the Philip­pines, Sin­ga­pore, Thai­land and Viet­nam. Con­cur­rently, she co-founded Rogueart, a Malaysia-based cul­tural agency where her clients in­cluded artists, gal­leries, in­sti­tu­tions, and cor­po­rate and pri­vate col­lec­tions. Ooi also pre­vi­ously worked as the cu­ra­tor and pro­gramme direc­tor of the Valen­tine Wil­lie Fine Art gallery in Kuala Lumpur.
