he goal of the American Foundation for Aids Research (amfar) is the peak of idealism: to put an end to Aids. Since the organisation was founded in 1985, it has pumped more than US$388 million into innovative research programmes. Over US$100 million of that figure has been raised by amfar’s spectacular balls, which take place in 10 cities around the world; this year, Hong Kong can be proudly counted among them. The inaugural event, chaired by Pansy Ho with Gwyneth Paltrow as honorary chair and Michelle Yeoh as ambassador, is a black-tie gala dinner, which includes a cocktail reception, a live auction conducted by Simon de Pury and top-class entertainment. Some of the most distinguished international names along with celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Larry Gagosian and Marc Jacobs have attended past events. Seats are $15,000, with special philanthropist packages available for tables of 10 and 12. March 14; 6.30pm; Shaw Studios, Tseung Kwan O. amfar.kintera.org/hongkong
