More than 200 art lovers descended on the Qube at PMQ for the annual Para Site fundraising gala. Over cocktails, guests strolled around the venue’s perimeter to view the 88 artworks—by top artists such as Ai Weiwei, Cai Guoqiang, Takashi Murakami, Lawrence Weiner and Antony Gormley—that would be auctioned later that evening. Para Site co-chairs Yana Peel and Alan Lau each gave a speech, after which attendees enjoyed tapas and a live performance by musician Shane Aspegren. Then, hands shot in the air as bidders furiously competed to lay claim to 22 of the pieces during a live auction. Pieces by Gormley and Olafur Eliasson shattered estimates of Hk$125,000–200,000—each work ended up selling for HK$330,000. Afterwards, a silent auction took place for the rest of the art, culminating in nearly HK$5 million (a record total) raised for the gallery’s future endeavours.
