The founder of the Foodlink Foundation, Hong Kong’s leading hunger-relief charity, Vanessa Hwang works hard to raise money to reduce food waste and provide hot meals to thousands of impoverished people every week.
“My father was very philanthropic, and set an example for my siblings and me to love the less fortunate. It is because of his teachings that I founded the Foodlink Foundation in 2001. The vision is to ensure every needy person has access to one hot, healthy meal a day. We collect safe-to-eat surplus food from F&B outlets and deliver it to those in need. Foodlink’s role is to connect the supply to the demand as effectively as possible. The benefits are twofold—while reducing hunger, we also reduce the pressure on landfills. The biggest challenge is finding financial support, but we raise money through events, grant applications, corporate sponsorship and individual donations. Hong Kong Parkview hosts an annual charity bazaar, and Foodlink has been chosen to be the beneficiary and exclusive running collaborator for the past five years, which is wonderful. We treasure the opportunity to offer a day of education for families and friends to gather and learn about Foodlink’s mission, and the issues of poverty and food waste in Hong Kong.”
