Too elitist, too expensive—these have long been the complaints levelled at the sweet wines of Sauternes. But with the introduction of SO Sauternes in partnership with bottledwater brand Perrier, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is seeking to rejuvenate the image of botrytised wines from Bordeaux’s Graves subregion. The idea is to make a lighter, fruitier, more accessible Sauternes suitable for blending with the sparkling water in the form of a cocktail. It’s hoped the SO Perrier will find its way onto the drinks lists of hip bars in Paris and attract a younger audience. The fruit is being sourced from younger vines in low-lying areas from a yet undisclosed number of the region’s first growths, though Château de Rayne-vigneau is said to be onboard.
